 Stop Discrimination in Compensation for Rape Victims: Justice for Sex Workers is Justice for All

Tuesday, November 12, 6pm to 7:30pm, SF Public library, Latina/Hispanic Meeting Room, lower level, 100 Larkin Street (Civic Center BART), SF

● The California Victim Compensation program (CalVCP) has regulations excluding some victims of rape such as sex workers and formerly incarcerated people from getting compensation for rape and other violence. When some victims are discriminated against in this way it means that any victim can be judged unworthy and refused.   It sends the message that rape is tolerated for some, even encouraged and leads to more violence. 

 ● A campaign to get the discriminatory regulations scrapped is getting results. The CalVCP board in Sacramento has agreed to review the regulation excluding sex workers and a proposal is being put to their November 21 board meeting.

● The regulation disqualifying ex-prisoners on felony probation or parole from compensation is also being opposed, as well as the current process where rather than the state taking responsibility to compensate victims, they extract payments called “restitution” from prisoners, many of whom are inside for non-violent offenses including crimes of poverty.

● Come hear about the campaign and what you can do.  We want to hear your ideas, suggestions, concerns with a view to strengthening this campaign.  Pressure is needed to end this discrimination.
